Duties and Responsibilities
Daily:
1.Collects blood samples from patients.
2.Collects units of blood from Donors within the Blood Bank area.
3.Collects units of blood from Donors at other venues offered.
4.Assists Departmental Medical Staff to obtain biopsies from patients.
5.Provides cover for phlebotomists in other areas of the program in the event of Staff shortages in those areas due to resignations, sickness or annual leave.
6.Assists in the departmental specimen reception or Medical Laboratory areas.
7.Performs any other tasks commensurate with the position and as defined by the Chief Medical Laboratory Technologist.
8.The incumbent will perform the duties in accordance with the practices laid down by the Chief Medical Laboratory Technologist and Consultant Haematologist and within the specific guidelines laid down in the department. At all times consideration should be given to the safety and wellbeing of both patients and staff given the potentially hazardous nature of the relevant procedures and the potentially infective nature of blood. As it is not always possible for the incumbent to be constantly supervised, he/she must be able to organize and complete the daily work schedule in an efficient and conscientious manner, in collaboration with other Members of the Phlebotomy Team.
9.Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.
