The work performed by the phlebotomist requires professional knowledge and competence in the field of clinical laboratory technology to:

• Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.

• Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.

• Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or another specimen collection (ex. urine or stool) as required

• Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

• Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.

• Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

• Check all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% correct.

• Package specimens for transport

• Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.

• Understand and comply with safety and infection control regulations.

• Answer telephone calls.

يتطلب العمل الذي تقوم به أخصائية سحب الدم معرفة مهنية وكفاءة في مجال المختبرات الطبية من أجل: 

• القيام بسحب الدم، ووضع العلامات على العينات، وعينات الطرد المركزي، وتسجيل بيانات الصيانة وإزالة التلوث، وتحديث معلومات المريض.
• تجميع وتخزين العينات وفقًا للإجراءات المعمول بها.

• شرح عملية تجميع العينات على النحو المطلوب (سحب الدم أو تجميع البول أو البراز) بطريقة احترافية ومهذبة وبسيطة للمريض.

• امكانية تطبيق تقنيات السحب المختلفة باستخدام إبر مستقيمة/ أو إبر فراشة

• فهم كامل لجميع أوامر الأطباء.

• مطابقة نماذج طلب المختبر للأنابيب المخصصة لكل تحليل أو عينة. تمييز كل عينة بطريقة صحيحة، الطرد المركزي، فصل وتقسيم العينات، وتجميد العينات في حال طلب ذلك

• التحقق من جميع طلبات الاختبارات وملصقات الأنابيب ومقارنتها بطلب الطبيب لضمان صحة 100٪.

• حزم واعداد العينات للنقل.

• تخزين العينات وفقًا لدرجات الحرارة المطلوبة للحفاظ على صلاحيتها؛ بوضع العينات في حاوية / أنبوب تجميع مناسب. دقة ترميزها وتعليمها، وتتبع الإجراءات المختلفة الخاصة وفقًا لبروتوكولات النقل والحفاظ على سلامة العينات.

• الفهم والامتثال للوائح السلامة ومكافحة العدوى.

• الرد على المكالمات الهاتفية بطريقة احترافية.
