CSSD TECHNICIAN

Duties and Responsibilities

 

To work under supervision on a rotational basis, in all areas of the department including: dirty instrument/washroom reception, production/assembly room including microsurgical instrumentation, sterilizing, stock control and dispatch. Undertake instructions from supervisory staff to produce sterilize, dispatch instruments and dressing packs for use by the hospital in line with departmental policies in a safe and cost effective manner.

 

The employee will:

 

3.1       Perform reception duties, checking and washing of all used surgical equipment returned to the department for processing in line with departmental policy.

3.2       Assemble all types of surgical equipment, dressing packs, supplementary instruments and non-container instruments surgical trays used throughout the hospital using the materials and plant within the department in a safe and effective manner in line with departmental policy.

3.3       Assist in correct and safe sterilizing all surgical instruments and dressing packs for the PSMMC according to departmental policy.

3.4       Improve and maintain the quality of produced work in the CSSD to the highest standard of quality.

3.5       Inform the immediate supervisor/senior technician of any defects connected with either surgical equipments or goods processed by the department in the process of production and delivery.

3.6       Undertake any other duties at the request of the supervisor.

3.7       Contribute to on-call commitment to cover the technical requirement for patients under the care of the clinician.

3.8       Monitor and maintain Infection Control Policy and Quality Assurance.

3.9       Actively participate in departmental responsibilities, fire/disaster drills and in-service training.

3.10     Carry out autoclave leak rate tests in conjunction with the Autoclave Maintenance Engineer and record the results.

3.11     Carry out Bowie-Dick pre-use autoclave test, complete all paperwork and present it to the Quality Control Officer for authorization of machine use.

3.12     Carry out microbiological challenge tests on all sterilizer processes and note batch load sheet.

3.13     Load and unload the autoclave trolley in a manner, which will be conductive to the sterilization process to be used and ensure thorough drying of load contents.

3.14     Check all products prior to loading to ensure they carry the batch code of label of the correct color corresponding to the year period.

3.15     Check each individual finished load to establish that all heat indicators have changed color and that the products are dry, and annotate the batch record sheet to authorize the removal and supply of the sterile goods.

3.16     Prepare and check all items for Ethylene Oxide and Plasma sterilization, and accept only item that match on the “permissible load listing.”

3.17     Liaise with the Engineers and control PPM for 10 sterilizers.

3.18     Consult with the Quality Control Officer regarding any unlisted products sent for EtO and Plasma sterilization to ascertain their acceptance for entrance in the register of “permissible load listing.

3.19     Carry out all pre-process requirements for EtO Plasma sterilization, prepare and load microbiological challenges and formulate standard load processes.

 3.20     Check and record the local gas/air analysis using equipment provided before entering the sterilizer room. Check if emergency breathing apparatus is present and working.

3.21     Prepare and check all items for Plasma Hydrogen Peroxide and Formaldehyde/Ammonia disinfection/sterilization. Monitor chemical usage during the process and check daily the safety equipment and emergency breathing apparatus.

3.22     Be required to maintain all log books for three (\6) Porous Load Autoclaves and four (4) Plasma Hydrogen Peroxide.

3.23     Check all materials accessories use for sterilization and wrapping materials/tapes.

3.24     Perform other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities.
