Consultant general surgeon

• 3.1 Consultant accepts ultimate responsibility for the care of patient referred to them, medically, professionally, morally and legally.
• 3.2 A Consultant is involves in and often leading multidisciplinary teams delivering surgical care to the patient. This involves being able to take and overview of the care pathway and policy, and to manage and interact with the other team members functions (junior surgical staff, nurses, anesthetists, physiotherapist, pharmacists, etc.) accordingly.
• 3.3 Consultants are also expected to be involved in the teaching and guidance and by example and to contribute and leadership.
• 3.4 Consultants sit on committees and working patient, participate in the research panels to improve various aspects of medical services.
• 3.5 Admit patients from the Accident and Emergency Department in the corresponding shifts of duty and to choose the best plan of action including transfer to alternate facilities with better equipment and expertise.
• 3.6 Admit patients from the Outpatient Department for electively planned surgical procedures according to his privileges.
• 3.7 Attends daily ward rounds and review patients on a regular basis with the surgical team, reviewing and modifying if necessary the plan of action of cases when the need arises.
• 3.8 Contributes to quality improvement; risk management initiatives and policy development so that the overall surgical service is of the highest quality and reflective of the best practice.
• 3.9 Acts and behave professionally and morally and perform one’s duties in a manner that optimizes patient care and protects and enhances the reputation of the hospital.
• 3.10 Adheres to Hospital Policies and Procedure e.g. JCI, Code Blue, Infection Control, work hours and overtime, etc. comply with Health and Safety Regulations, ensuring safe working practices in a safe working environment.
• 3.11 To undertake any other duties that may be required which could include assisting medical colleagues of other departments throughout the hospital and acting as resource for more junior colleagues.
• 3.12 To act under the supervision and answerable to the head of the Department and the Medical Administration and Hospital Managerial Committee and to comply with corresponding policy and regulations.
