Duties and Responsibilities
· Takes an evidence-based approach to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
· Assists in planning of nursing care, its implementation, evaluation and amendment, as appropriate.
· Demonstrates effective communication in the work place.
· Acts as a preceptor for the new staff.
· Partakes in quality improvement programmes.
· Implements infection prevention and control guidelines in all clinical settings.
· Checks and maintains good functioning of all medical equipment per shift.
· Receives newborn babies, upon normal vaginal delivery, assisted deliveries.
· Identifies the newborn baby according to the hospital policy.
· Takes the initial footprints of the newborn per hospital policy.
· Assists the doctor and the midwife with resuscitation if baby asphyxiated at birth.
· Renders immediate care of the newborn.
· Identifies clinical risk factors and interprets vital data that is abnormal.
· Consults the pediatrician of baby's change of condition or abnormal data.
· Administers initial medication for the newborn as per protocol.
· Assists Doctor for specific procedures, e.g. Blood extraction of the newborn.
· Adheres to discharge procedure of newborn under supervision of charge nurse or team leader.
· Promotes breast feeding, bonding and its advantages in mother craft.
· Triages ante natal patients above 20 weeks presenting in OAU.
· Initiates screening of a patient a patient above 20 weeks pregnant in OAU.
· Monitors vital signs, interprets them and acts promptly and appropriately, as indicated.
· Fixes cardiotocography machine and commences tracing of the fetal heart.

· Interprets trace data from cardiotocography and call for help of the midwives in case of abnormalities.
· Administers intravenous infusions, small volume analgesic, antibiotics as prescribed by doctor.
· Identifies high-risk patients presenting in gynecology emergency unit timeously.
· Performs intravenous cannulation, venipuncture for blood extraction as indicated and ordered by doctor.
· Assist doctors in managing acute hypovolemia due to severe per vaginal bleeding.
· Assist doctor in resuscitation of a patient with septic shock.
· Prepares the patient for emergency surgery.
· Gives significant health education relevant to the patient’s condition.
Skills
Must have good critical thinking skills.
· Must be computer-literate.
