Duties and Responsibilities
1.Ensures through his/her actions, either directly or indirectly, that a superior quality of nursing care, compassion and understanding is given to every patient.
2.Helps in optimizing resources to improve safety and quality of patient care.
Clinical:
1.Reports to the Head Nurse or Charge Nurse at the start of shifts to obtain necessary instructions.
2.Takes an active part in maintaining the cleanliness of the unit.
3.Keeps linen room orderly and maintains linen inventory.
4.Changes bed linen and tidies patient rooms.
5.Assists patients with hygiene and elimination needs.
6.Reports any abnormalities to nursing staff.
7.Assist patients with skin preparation for procedures.
8.Escorts patients, using a wheelchair or wheeled cart, to and from other departments if the patient is classified as not being “at risk”.
9.Turns and repositions bed-ridden patients alone or with assistance, to prevent pressure ulcers.
10.Takes and records patient’s temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, height and weight under supervision of the nursing staff. Reports any abnormalities to the Nurse.
11.Distributes and collects food trays and feeds patients requiring help (when instructed by the Staff Nurse or Charge Nurse).
12.Answers patient call bells to determine patients’ needs and reports requests or issues to Staff Nurses as required.
13.Acts as a chaperone as necessary.
14.Cleans, stores and prepare items in unit storeroom. Maintains optimal levels of stock and ensures that stock items have not expired. Keeps storeroom orderly and restocks unit areas.
15.Cares for and cleans specialized equipment and procedure trays as indicated.
16.Completes maintenance requisitions and informs Nurse in-charge of any equipment malfunction.
17.Runs errands, directs visitors, answers telephones and performs various clerical duties including photocopying, filing, forms completion and other related duties as required.
18.Works efficiently and reports any unfinished work to the Charge Nurse.
19.Demonstrates superior interpersonal skills and a willingness to help.
*Is aware of and complies with:

- Basic aseptic technique
- QAFH and departmental policies and procedures
- Emergency contingency plans.
20.Assists nursing staff with clinical procedures and direct patient care, including urinary catheter insertion and care, naso-gastric tube insertion, etc.
Training and Education:
Promotes own knowledge, skills and abilities through participation in training programs and includes mandatory sessions such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Manual Handling, Infection Control and Fire training.
Other:
Performs other related duties as required.
