Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for providing direct care to adult, paediatric and geriatric patients in the Optometry Division, under the line of the Consultant In-Charge and exercising appropriate independent clinic judgment, assesses the refractive/optical needs of patients with using specialized knowledge and technical and clinical skills.

The employee will:

 

 

  • Provide direct patient care in the OPD as assigned/required by the Consultant In-Charge.

 

 

  • Accept/complete assignments as directed by the Consultant In-Charge.

 

 

  • Demonstrate cooperative working behavior in Optometry and other services to see a maximum number of patients per clinical session.

 

 

  • Provide direct guidance to Optometry staff and handle/deal with day to day operation issues of the Optometry services.

 

 

  • Perform accurate clinical services and properly document findings in accordance with PSMMC Optometry standards.

 

 

  • Identify and communicate patients' ocular/refractive and contact lens problems to the referring physician.

 

 

  •  Deal with patients' concerns and uses his/her best judgment to handle them in a prompt and professional manner.

 

 

  • As directed by the In Consultant In-Charge, provide low vision and contact lens services.

 

 

  • Assess patients and their families' educational needs and implement patient/family teaching program, as appropriate.

 

 

  • Ensure proper documentation of all clinical and general information/activity/intervention related to involved patients.

 

 

  • Maintain a high degree of general and clinical expertise in Ophthalmic/Optometric/Ophthalmologic terminology, procedures and concepts.

 

 

  • Attend the department’s lecture as well as other educational programs, including ophthalmologist symposia to maintain a clinical ophthalmological knowledge base.

 

 

  • Assume responsibility for his/her continuing education and professional development.

 

 

  • Participate in developing and presenting appropriate optometric related education program to the department.

 

 

  • Promote and maintains effective communication processes of the Optometry services and within OPD.

 

 

  • Demonstrate cooperative behavior and provide assistance to others in Optometry, the OPD as necessary, appropriate and/or directed and maintain Optometry services area(s) in good order.

 

 

  • Promote active, integrative communication process with patients, visitors, physicians and other staff.

 

 

  • Share concerns, comments, suggestions etc., effective with Consultant In-Charge.

 

 

  • Report housekeeping and/or safety concerns to appropriate PSMMC resources and follow-up to ensure appropriate corrective action is affected and maintains Optometry services areas in compliance with Infection Control and Environmental Rounds Standards.

 

 

  • Maintain proper medications in exam room to ensure adequate supplies and that all medications are not outdated and/or expired.

 

 

  • Maintain general, printed and patient education materials and supplies in exam room to meet patient care and coordinates with Patient Education Department in order to do so.

 

 

  • Maintain Optometry services areas in compliance with Infection Control and Environment Rounds Standards.

 

 

  • Keep the In-charge of the Optometry Division informed of the quality issues needing further attention.

 

 

  • Continually reviews Optometry operations and activities and recommends operational improvements to the in-charge of the optometry division.

 

 

  • Participate in investigation of identified issues, concerns, complaints and/or suggestions regarding optometry operations and activities as directed by the in-charge of the Optometry Division.

 

 

  • Participate in formal optometry performance improvement activities as assigned.

 

 

  • Participate in investigation of identified issues, concerns, complaints and/or suggestions regarding optometry operations and activities as directed by the In-charge of the Optometry Division.

 

 

  • Perform other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities.

 

 

Skills

 

 

 

  • Demonstrate excellent clinical skills in subjective refraction.

 

 

  • Knowledge in using of standard optometrist measuring instruments: Lensmeter, kerameter, lens bar, prism racks, phorotor, trial lens case and frame.

 

 

  • Thorough understanding of examination procedures of severely visually disabled patients.

 

 

  • Self-motivated and with awareness of current trends in the field.

 

 

  • Ability to handle a large volume of patients of varying visual difficulties.

 

 

  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
