Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Carry out clinical and other duties allocated by the Chief of Department.
  2. The Registrar could be asked to supervise Resident’s management of patients within the department, and if necessary, in the absence of Resident, carries out the basic Resident work.
  3. The Registrar shall be responsible for orientation of new Resident staff.
  4. Take on-call duty according to the departmental duty rota. He/she shall be the first / second on-call for all emergency cases necessitating his specialty and for all in-patients requiring urgent attention after the usual daily morning rounds.
  5. Clerk all admissions, including cases admitted from the Emergency Room, O.P.D and labor cases. A full history and a full general physical examination shall be carried out, paying attention to the patient’s past health and current general health, meticulously documenting all details.  Relevant routine and special laboratory tests as appropriate shall be ordered.  He/she shall ensure that all cases going for surgery, elective or emergency are fit for anesthesia and any anaesthetic risk factors shall be notified to the Anaesthetist.
  6. Inform the consultant after having evaluated cases and obtained relevant laboratory data. If the condition of the patient is urgent, he /she may contact the consultant after preliminary evaluation and before laboratory results are obtained.
  7. Ensure that the appropriate informed consent is obtained for any intervention, including induction of labor, instrumental delivery and surgery. This consent is routine in all labor cases.
  8. To run outpatient clinics as scheduled and be responsible for booking and admitting patients, who will be under care of an assigned Consultant.
  9. Supervise the labor and when required, conduct the delivery of patients and document the events of labor in chronological order, including any special maneuvers and instrumental delivery in the appropriate sheets in the notes.  He/she shall write the appropriate postpartum orders for each patient.
  10. Write daily progress notes and orders.  All notes shall be signed, dated and stamped with the time noted.  These will be reviewed and initiated by the consultant on the same day.
  11. Shall be present in the hospital at all times during his/her assigned call-duty, and must not under any circumstance, leave until he/she is relieved by the incoming on-call or another resident / registrar.
  12. Assist the consultant during operations and can perform operations and procedures appropriate to his/her level of experience, under the supervision of the consultant.
  13. Take special care of postoperative patients entrusted to his/her care during working hours and after hours, especially in the immediate postoperative period and notify the consultant of any complications.
  14. Present his/her on-call activities, including admissions, critically ill cases and problems arising from in-patients, at the daily morning departmental meeting.
  15. Do morning ward-rounds with the consultant to whom he/she is assigned.
  16. Write discharge summaries and fill in stillbirth and abortion notification certificates as appropriate at the time of the event.
  17. When not on-call and not officially off-duty, he/she shall be present in the hospital during normal working hours (7.30 a.m. – 4.30 p.m.) and participate in the running of the outpatient department or undertake any other duties assigned by the Chief of Department.
  18. Participate actively in other departmental activities, including clinical presentations, grand-rounds, perinatal mortality and morbidity meetings etc.
  19. Take active part in quality improvement strategies of the department including designing of research protocols, data collection, strict adherence to departmental policies and procedures etc.
