Duties and Responsibilities:

• Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in accordance with established Policies and Procedures directed towards standards of patient care, safety and Infection Control.

• Initiates, performs, supervises and monitors a range of nursing measures based on patient needs related to physical, psychosocial and economical comfort, positioning, mobilization, nutrition and hydration, bowel and bladder elimination, care of skin and wounds, support of respiration hygiene, communication and other physical and mental bodily functions.

• Undertakes the role of the primary care nurse specific to the service rendered and able to work under stressful condition.

• Performs procedures accurately, completely and safely according to hospital policy and recognizes emergency situations and takes appropriate action by summoning RRT.

• Communicates and provides accurate and complete information through established verbal and written reports.

• Undertakes comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment using suitable assessment tools for example pain, falls and skin integrity.

• Evaluates patients progress towards expected outcomes and this includes treatments, health education and rehabilitation.

• Reports any significant change in patients’ condition to appropriate Charge Nurse/Head Nurse and/or responsible Physician.

• Assists with the resolution of problems on shift-to=shift basis with appropriate documentation and follow up reports to the Head Nurse.

• Hand overs patient utilizing an effective handover tool necessary for continuity of care or when transfer of patient is required.

• Contributes to care planning involving patients and family demonstrating an understanding of patients’ rights to make informed decisions.

• Participates in the planning provision of patient and family teaching relative to their understanding of the illness and treatment. Collaborates with other healthcare team members to develop patient teaching plan by using Multi-Disciplinary Patient and Family Education Tool.

• Providing health education with appropriate information to make decisions related to treatments, investigations and imaging procedure through assistance of doctors and other members of the health team.

• Acts as preceptor and assists with orientation of new staff.

• Attends General Hospital Orientation, Nursing Orientation and completes and renews hospital wide compulsory competencies as required.

• Successfully completes and renews all general nursing and unit based competencies required.

• Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned by the Director of Nursing or designee within the realm of his / her knowledge, skills and abilities.

Personal Qualities/Skills Required:

• Current experience in a Charge Nurse capacity or potential to fulfill Charge Nurse role.

• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

• Is a liaison between the patient, the patient’s family and other healthcare professionals and acts as a patient / family advocate.

• Collaborative, able to work with all members of healthcare team in a manner that promotes and encourages each contribution towards achieving optimal patient, family and organizational goals.

• Able to respond, anticipate and integrate cultural differences into patient / family care and foster principles of excellent customer service.

• Able to facilitate learning for patients / families, nursing staff and other members of the healthcare team in both a formal and informal educational setting.

• Practices within the Professional Code of Conduct.
